Kasumi Horai Instructor Course
1. Overview
This instructor course is intended only for people who already know me personally.
Kinbaku is not only about technical skill. Personal character, maturity, and trust are equally important.
Because Kinbaku involves deep trust and personal responsibility, participation in this course is based on my personal judgment.
Before applying for this course, you must first attend at least one group workshop or private lesson with me. If you are interested in the instructor course, please discuss it with me at that time.
In 2025, Sin from Hong Kong became the first person in the world to complete this instructor program.
Because the speed of learning varies from person to person, it is difficult to define an exact number of hours. However, as a general guideline:
Technical training: approximately 6 hours per day for 8–10 days
Cultural training: approximately 4 days
In total, the program usually takes about 12–14 days.
As part of the program, participants will also stay two nights and three days at a traditional Japanese ryokan, where they will experience aspects of Japanese culture that are very different from Western hotels.
This instructor course is not only about learning techniques.
It is about understanding the philosophy, culture, and responsibility that accompany the art of Kinbaku.
My goal is not to create copies of my style, but to help each student develop their own path as a Kinbaku artist.
Language Requirement
Because this course includes explanations of Japanese cultural concepts such as wabi-sabi, emotional expression in Kinbaku, and the importance of “ma” (timing and spatial awareness), participants or interpreters should have Japanese proficiency equivalent to approximately JLPT N1.
2. Costs
In addition to your travel expenses to Japan, the following costs may apply:
• Interpreter fees (if you do not speak Japanese)
• Model fees (if you do not bring your own model, a professional paid model can be arranged)
Because every participant’s situation is different, I cannot provide an exact estimate in advance.
First we must meet in person and discuss your background, and I need to see your current level of rope work. Only then can I provide an estimated cost.
The course will begin only after you are fully satisfied with the details.
After successfully completing the instructor course, you will receive an official certificate. You will then be permitted to teach professionally, for a fee, the material you learned in this program in your own country or elsewhere.
3. Disciples
At present, I do not have any disciples.
In my view, being a disciple means continuing your teacher’s Kinbaku style and philosophy almost exactly, without significant alteration.
An instructor, however, is different. While instructors may pass on my teachings, they are free to explore other Kinbaku styles or decorative rope expressions that I personally do not practice.
A disciple accepts greater limitations. Having a master means accepting certain restrictions. I have experienced this myself.
My philosophy is not to create copies of my own style.
After learning the techniques and Japanese cultural concepts that I teach, it is important that each student develops their own artistic voice.
For this reason, I currently have no intention of taking disciples.
Rather than becoming a “Kasumi Style” rope artist, I hope you will become a Kinbaku artist recognized worldwide under your own name and style.
4. Prohibited Conduct
Applicants who exhibit any of the following behaviors will not be accepted into the instructor course:
4.1 Acting without consent
(This includes not only rope or sexual activity, but any behavior that ignores another person’s refusal.)
4.2 Racist behavior or discrimination based on race
4.3 Lack of respect for cultural diversity
4.4 Criticizing other Kinbaku schools or styles
Such attitudes are completely contrary to the spirit of Japanese culture and therefore cannot be accepted.
5. Learning Outcomes
After completing the Kasumi Horai Instructor Course, participants will be able to:
• Understand the cultural philosophy behind Japanese Kinbaku
• Demonstrate advanced rope techniques taught in the program
• Professionally teach the techniques and concepts learned in this course
• Explain the importance of trust, consent, and responsibility in Kinbaku
• Develop their own artistic expression while respecting Japanese cultural principles
